Peru: Enabling TSIs in Peru's northern corridor to respond to the needs of exporters
|
Description
This project was designed to strengthen the capacity of trade support institutions (TSI) in the northern corridor of Peru to provide business development services (BDS) that address the needs of the agribusiness exporters.
Eight regions of Peru are covered through this project: Amazonas, Cajamarca, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Loreto, Piura, San Martin and Tumbes, representing 44.6% of Peru’s surface, 20% of its GDP and 23% of its exports (2009).
The project has two main national partners MINCETUR and PROMPERU and a network of local TSIs involved as project beneficiaries.
The intervention started with a GAP analysis that highlighted the BDS that required additional reinforcing, with the analysis divided into three different geographical sub-regions (coast, sierra and forest).
From the 30 BDS covered by the GAP analysis (grouped into three categories: production, business management and commercialization), 17 were prioritized at least in one of the sub-regions and were included as part of the project trainings.
Additionally, the project included a capacity building component for 4-5 key TSI that will reinforce the multiplication effect of the initiative.
This was complemented by a networking component to increase the interaction and cooperation between the different TSIs.
Finally, and in order to influence the decision making at the national level, the project has a component for increase the intra-regional dialogue between the different actors on trade policy priorities and to communicate them with the national government for further implementation.
