Eastern & Southern Africa: Strengthening capacity in market analysis for sector prioritization within COMESA (PACT II)
Description
The overall objective or expected result of PACTII is to achieve diversified and expanded exports within and outside Africa contributing to sustainable economic and social development in Africa. Within this broader context, the objective of the MAR managed project is to build capacity of the COMESA Secretariat as well as TSIs within the COMESA region to use market analysis tools and methods to prioritize export sectors and markets with due consideration to poverty reduction, women and environment impact. The 2012 Workplan focuses on reinforcing the 2011 workplan through a regional training of trainers of those trained in 2011. The 2011 workplan had 3 sub activities: Sub Activity 2.2.1 A regional workshop for private sector industry institutions on using ITC Trade and market analysis tools to identify export markets. Sub Activity 2.2.2: A regional workshop for public sector trade analysts to build their skills on analysing regional trade potential especially for intra-regional trade. Sub Activity 2.2.3: Create a online- e-learning web platform linked to the Trade Information and Business Intelligence Platform -TIBIP The 2009 and 2010 Workplan focussed on building capacity of COMESA and TSIs in a number of COMESA member states' to assess export potential. The project involved an initial workshop in 2009 to introduce an export potential assessment methodology and to assign "homework" to participants selected from arond the region. The participants then developed their own export potential analyses, either at the country or regional level over the following 2-3 months. Finally, the participants came together with ITC analysts again in early 2010 to present their drafts.
